Just like when you enter into a library, the captivating silence in the library helps you to focus and assimilate worldly wisdom. Similarly, there is a treasure of immense peace, wisdom and happiness within you. All you need is to take out time to quieten your mind and explore within. You can call such an appointment with your inner silence as meditation.
Meditation is taking time out for your true Self; mediation is the time you spend in exploring inner world and managing it; mediation is the time when you attempt to master your mind instead of conducting in the external world as its slave; mediation is the time that you spend in knowing the Truth, instead of being lost in this illusionary external world; mediation is the time when you explore peace and happiness within.
Your “seeking” begins when you understand the importance of achieving the higher state of inner peace and blissfulness while living, not after death. Your seeking begins when you make an appointment with yourself for at least fifteen minutes, preferably during early hours, before sunrise. Just like your business appointments, you should commit yourself for those fifteen minutes to remain focused on your inner being. During those precious moments, try honestly in such a manner that the worries, tensions, judgments, memories and thoughts of the external world don’t disturb you.
This might sound difficult in the beginning, but with practice it will become easy for you, just like anything else in life. Before you begin meditation, it is important to gain proper understanding of the inner world -the world of your mind, intellect and your true Self; it is important to keep your mind and inner senses pristine; it is important to know the importance of the wisdom of the Self.
Once a seeker went to a holy man and asked, “Dear master, whenever I sit for meditation, my mind becomes more restless. My mind begins to wander in old memories – memories of my old friends, memory of my unpaid bills and all sorts of non-sense. How do I overcome it?”
The holy man answered smilingly, “Meditation is like cleaning your cupboard (of mind). When you begin to clean the stuff in the front, a lot of stuff that has piled up for many many years, will begin to fall in the front. But don't worry, in this process your cupboard is getting cleaned anyway. Slowly, as it begins to become empty, you will begin to feel good.”
Once you begin to taste the peace and tranquality within; once you experience inner happiness, then you won’t have to do mediation. Mediation will happen on its own. You will begin to be in the blissful state of mind irrespective on external circumstances. But, like everything else in life, it needs certain commitment and practice. Slowly and steadily, you will progress on the path of inner happiness, provided you take out time for your own self. Making a daily appointment for exploring inner world is the first step on this path.
