Kabirji, , highly revered mystic of India who
lived in 15th century, to me represents the epitome of spiritual
wisdom, devotion and the wisdom of life. The longer the Saint lives, the more
benefit humankind can gain. Saint Kabirji lived for about 120 years and hence
the fragrance of his wisdom in the form of his deeply meaningful poetic versus
is alive even today and will remain alive for a long time. He is probably the
most quoted poet in India.
Once Kabirji was giving discourse to a usual
gathering of seekers about the nature of a true seeker – how the seeker should
be? It is very interesting to see how beautifully he recited these lines full
of mysticism. He started with comparing the ego-less nature of a seeker to a pebble, then
compared him to soil on earth, water and then finally he said the nature of a true seeker should be same as the nature of the one
that he is seeking - the omnipresent God.
Roda hoi rahu baat ka, taji paakhand abhimaan.
Aisa je jana hoi rahe, taahi mile bhagwaan.
Kabirji advices that be as humble as the pebble
on the path, where it is under everyone’s feet. Leave behind all sorts of show-offs
and ego behind. The person, who becomes humble like this, will be able to meet
the God.
Roda bhaya to kya bhaya, panthi ko dukh deh.
Harijan aisa chaiye, jyu dharni ki kheh.
Again Kabir thinks that being like pebble is not
enough, so he says – even if you become like a pebble on the pathway, still
there is a chance that a traveler’s feet may be hurt by you. So be like the
soil of the earth.
Kheh bhayi to kya bhaya, uDi-uDi laage ang.
Harijan aiasa chahiye, jyu paanee sabrang.
Again Kabir says- even if you become like soil,
it is not enough. It flies with air and makes people dirty. So Kabir says that
just be like water – without even its own identity or color.
Panee bhaya to kya bhaya, taataa-seeraa hoy.
Harijan aisa chahiye, Hari jaiasa hi hoy.
Again Kabir thinks of all possibilities and says
that being like water is still not good enough. Water sometimes gets hot with
the heat and becomes too cold in winter. So Kabir says there is no other way
for a true devotee (harijan) to meet him, but to be just like HIM.
The goal of a true seeker is to lose individual identity or ego and be
one with Him. Only by becoming just like Him, the true seeker merge with Him
just like water becomes one with the ocean. The Truth of the matter is that
your true Self is God Himself, you just have to remove the veil of ego and
ignorance to realize that Truth.
