Most of you would agree that it is the nature of human mind to develop a set of believes and faith based on the nature of upbringing and childhood experiences. The human mind cannot remain free of such beliefs and impressions. This is true in the material world, as well as in the spiritual world. Based on your early impressions, mostly from your parents, you consider yourself as a Christian or a Hindu or a Muslim or a Budhist or an atheist. Yes, even atheism is also a form of faith.
Now, after growing up, there are two types of people based on how they deal with these set of beliefs or faith. The vast majority of people never question their parents or themselves about the doctrines, the holy scriptures, the historical stories of God, philosophy of after-death heaven and hell etc. They just assume everything to be true and continue to lead the religious life based on their assumptions. They just continue to follow the scriptures and the religious customs based on how they were told by their parents and others. They rarely go into the depth of spirituality by asking about the true spirit or about the true omnipresent formless God that is residing in every heart.
Then, there are other type of people, somewhat rare, who are inquisitive and use their discriminative powers even when it comes to their spiritual beliefs. They refuse to follow the herd. They don’t just follow the directions of the prophets or scriptures blindly. They begin to make use of the highest form of gift from God to humans- their discriminative power. They begin to ask that how are those historical stories of God or the philosophy of heaven and hell, going to help them in their present life. How can they become a better person, how can they find inner peace, how can they find inner happiness and how can they meet the God that resides in their heart.
Unfortunately, in the western world, most of such seekers eventually turn out to be atheist because they fail to get their answers. However, in the eastern world, such people become truly spiritual, instead of just being religious, because they find proper guidance from the Self realized Saints. Such people become true seekers of the Self, the inner peace, the inner happiness, the spirit and the true omnipresent non-dual God.
Faith, without discrimination, will lead you nowhere. You have to realize that it is not just the ignorance, that is your major obstacle in the search of Truth, but it is the illusion of knowledge or deep rooted beliefs, that stop you from becoming the true seeker of the divine presence in your heart. First step in the seeking of Truth is to acknowledge your ignorance and then with the help of proper discrimination, slowly get rid of all of your deep rooted beliefs. In this manner, by making proper use of your discrimination, you will become truly free- free like a child, free like a Self realized one – truly peaceful and truly happy.
