Saints have an unusual way of putting across their message. They don't want to prove you wrong or hurt your ego and at the same time they don't want you to remain ignorant. This is a short story about a Sufi saint named Rabia.
Rabia and Hasan used to exchange their spiritual thoughts after dinner. Rabia, the Sufi saint, was in the state of deep love with the Supreme whereas Hasan was still a religious follower. Hasan used to convey to Rabia about his deep desire to go for Hajj to Mecca.
One evening when Hasan went to meet Rabia after dark, he was a little surprise to see Rabia who was searching for something on the street under the street light (coming from flame in the olden days). Curiously, he asked, “Rabia, what are you looking for here?”
“I lost my needle and I am looking for that in the light here.”
“Where did you lose it?”
“I lost it inside my house. But it is dark inside my house. So, I thought I would go and find it in the light.”
While holding his laugh, Hasan said, “You are really strange. If you lost your needle inside the house, how would you expect it to find it here.”
“Hasan, that is what I am trying to convey to you. You won't be able to find God in Mecca or anywhere else in the outer world. God is not lost in the outer world as it is present in each and every magnificence of nature. The true God is lost somewhere inside you, in the darkness of ignorance, under the coverings of your mind. Only you can get rid of the darkness within with the help of spiritual self analysis, meditation, chanting, company of saints and other holy means. Beneath that darkness of ignorance, deep inside you, lies the treasure of eternal peace and supreme happiness.”
Humbled by the words of wisdom from Rabia, Hasan left the place quietly in deep thoughts.
