Wonderful wine of Spirituality

Human mind needs something more than just money, power and wealth. Only good food and gorgeous clothes are not enough. It needs some intoxication in the form of excitement, joy, merriment, enthusiasm or pleasure. Such intoxication is absolute requirement of human mind. Without such a joy, the life seems to be lacking something, it seems to be incomplete.

Human mind is also filled with a lot of worries and negative thoughts – about the memories of the past and about the anxieties of the future. There are two ways to get rid of mental restlessness – either to forget it with the help of external intoxications or to rise above the restlessness of the mind by exploring the real form of peace and happiness within; by exploring the Truth.

It is human nature to seek easier routes for achieving the desired results. This tendency of human mind resulted in the advent of all sorts of intoxications like wine, alcohol, drugs etc from the time immemorial. One can easily buy with money a variety of agents that can help to relieve you of the day to day tensions and tranquilize your mind. 

However, the Self realized Saints have described another kind of wonderful wine that can only be created within. It cannot be bought in the outside world with money. The Saints have described spiritual blissfulness or spiritual seeking as also a form of intoxication – those who taste it once always seek it again and again. The real form of joy, merriment or pleasure can be derived by exploring within while doing meditation. With the help of this wonderful wine of spirituality one can rise above all the restlessness of the mind without any external agency. Alcohol induces intoxication by making you unconscious, but spiritual merriment induces intoxication by making you conscious of your own true Self. Guru Nanak said:

Naam Khumari Nanka chadi rahey din raat !

May you remain absorbed, day and night in the intoxication of the holy name !

It is also true that once a being is used to certain type of intoxication – be it alcohol or drug or something else, it is difficult to get rid of that. Similarly once the true seeker becomes habitual to the inner wine of spirituality, he intends to always taste it again and again.

Everyone knows about the worldly wine, but only the fortunate ones get introduced to the inner wine of the spirit. The alcohol not only harms your health, but also reduces the lifespan. However, the wonderful wine of spirituality not only recovers your health but also improves the quality of your life by introducing you to the ever present peace and bliss within. Now it is up to you to decide whether you want to resort to the worldly wine present in the bottle or you wish to taste the wine that is ever present within.
